Some argue that culture is convoluted, unmanageable, and just seems to happen. That’s not our story.
At AIA, belonging is not a buzzword. It’s imperative for organizational success and an exceptional employment experience. We want our employees to feel comfortable at work. This includes being treated fairly and respected for their authentic selves and contributions. We want everyone to feel connected to the people they work with and the teams they’re part of. We want people to feel that they contribute to meaningful work outcomes. We want people to understand how their unique strengths help their teams achieve goals.
Here’s why: The people.
We’re 200+ employees headquartered in Washington, D.C. We’re passionate about our members and their roles in making the world a better place by design.
Our culture is values-based, inclusive, and respectful. You’ll find an energetic and collaborative environment with lots of dynamic, open communication.
We welcome diverse perspectives and aren’t afraid of change or embracing new ways of doing things. Often, our work demands it.
And we think big. We believe that good design has the power to make life better. This drives everything we do, every day, in support of our members and their futures.
We offer a competitive benefits package, including a generous amount of paid time off, medical, dental, and 401(k).
We’re proud to be an equal opportunity/affirmative action/minority/female/disabled/veteran employer.
This means we welcome and encourage applicants and employees without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity, national origin, marital status, age, personal appearance, sexual orientation, family responsibilities, political affiliation, physical or mental disability, or veteran status. Our equal employment opportunity (EEO) policy statement and the “EEO Is the Law” poster provide more information about what EEO means to our workplace culture and your rights as an applicant or employee.
If you have a disability and need an accommodation in the application process, please contact us: aiajobs@aia.org.
Affirmative Action & Equal Employment Opportunity Policy
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reaffirms its belief and commitment in equal employment opportunity for all employees and applicants for employment in all terms and conditions of employment.
AIA has developed and maintains a written Affirmative Action Program (AAP). AIA’s Chief Executive Officer supports the affirmative action program and urges each employee to commit to carrying out the intent of this policy. AIA maintains an audit and reporting system to determine overall compliance with its equal employment opportunity mandates. The EEO Administrator oversees the affirmative action plan development, modification, implementation, effectiveness, reporting requirements and conducts management updates. AIA invites any applicant and/or employee to review the written Affirmative Action Plan. This plan is available for inspection upon request during normal business hours in the Human Resources office.
As part of the AIA’s commitment to this overall process, it will seek to ensure that all aspects of employment, including recruitment, selection, job assignment, training, compensation, benefits, discipline, promotion, transfer, layoff and termination processes remain free of illegal discrimination based upon race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability (as defined under Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973) or protected veteran status (as defined under Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974). AIA ensures that all employment decisions are based only on valid job requirements. Regular review helps to ensure compliance with this policy.
AIA will ensure that employees and applicants shall not be subjected to harassment due to their status described above, or any harassment, intimidation, threats, coercion or discrimination because they have engaged in or may engage in any of the following activities; (1) filing a complaint with the AIA or with federal, state, or local agencies regarding status covered under this AAP, (2) assisting or participating in any investigation, compliance review, hearing, or any other activity related to the administration of any federal, state, or local equal employment opportunity or affirmative action statute pertaining to the status covered under this AAP; (3) opposing any act or practice made unlawful by section 503 and/or VEVRAA, and (4) exercising any other right protected by section 503 and/or VEVRAA or its implementing regulations in this part.
